Basketball has become a very well-loved internationally. Starting out just from the United States, with the invention of the sport by Dr. James Naismith, the game of basketball has become a very endeared in the so-called “land of the free”. With pioneers spearheading the exposure of basketball to the whole nation, the sport has become commercialized in the form of the very first professional basketball league in the world, which is the National Basketball Association or the NBA.

The NBA eventually turned out to be a national success and the sport of basketball has never been the same again. The whole country fell in love with the sport along with the great players of the game, an example of these superstars is George Mikan. During the 50s, the NBA emerged as one of the most promising leagues ever in the entire United States.

As the league progressed through the years, different players and different teams took center stage which transformed the NBA into a global phenomenon. As the 60s’ passed by, the Boston Celtics established a dynasty, acquiring consecutive basketball championships in the NBA. They also brought fame and glory to assist the emergence of the NBA. As the 70s rolled out, different personalities rose up, different superstars established their names. By this time, the sport of basketball has become internationally famous and the commercialization of the game has helped spread interest in the sport with different continents of the world. As the years went by, the league grew and grew, different countries established their own professional leagues. The second oldest professional basketball league next to the NBA is the Philippine Basketball Association or the PBA. The PBA is the Philippine’s professional basketball league. Just by looking at this, people could see the realization that the sport of basketball has become an international game.

When you look at the Olympics today, the most sought after sport is basketball.

Many glue themselves in watching the basketball games. There is great recognition with regards to this American sport. Indeed, the game has evolved through the years and the people of the world embraced it. The influence of the sport of basketball can be seen in so many examples. Before, the NBA usually had players from the United States alone, but today, there are many NBA teams that have foreign nationals in their line-ups, with the likes of Yao Ming, Manu Ginobili, Pau Gasol, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Andrew Bogut, to name a few.
